Which style is right for me?
Each style has a sweet spot. Here's an honest breakdown so you pick the one that'll actually work with your photo.
Tight square grid β the most forgiving style. Pets, portraits, landscapes all work.
β Best for: Pets Β· portraits Β· almost any photo
Fine grid, many thread colors. Handles the most detail of any style β very forgiving.
β Best for: Florals Β· portraits Β· detailed images
Yarn carried across each row. Beautiful for motifs but struggles with scattered color pops.
β Best for: Geometric Β· repeating patterns
β Watch out for: Lots of isolated color pops across a row
Corner-to-corner diagonal blocks. Great for bold shapes β the diagonal bias can distort faces.
β Best for: Bold shapes Β· diagonal compositions
β Watch out for: Straight portraits β diagonal bias distorts faces
Black-and-white open mesh only. Needs a strong, clean silhouette to read well.
β Best for: High-contrast silhouettes Β· outlines
β Watch out for: Gradients, complex interiors, busy backgrounds
Two-color slip-stitch technique. Stunning for geometric designs β real photos mostly collapse.
β Best for: Logos Β· 2β3 color graphics Β· geometric shapes
β Watch out for: Real photos β color complexity collapses to noise
Stranded or intarsia colorwork. Works beautifully for fairisle motifs and geometric repeats.
β Best for: Repeating motifs Β· geometric Β· fairisle
β Watch out for: Organic photos β needs strong simplification first
What makes a great pattern photo
The engine is powerful but works best when the photo gives it clear information to work with.
One clear subject
A face, pet, or object that fills most of the frame. Busy scenes compete with themselves at stitch resolution.
Good contrast & light
Even natural light, no harsh shadows cutting through your subject. Contrast is what the engine reads.
Crop close
A tight crop beats a wide landscape every time. Fine detail that survives at 80 stitches wide is rare.
Complex photos need large grids
A train, crowd, or busy scene won't simplify cleanly at Small or Medium grid β go Large or Expert.
